Rebuilding a hand for the NFL

In November 2015, Sports Illustrated reported on Deborah Austin's work in Boca Raton rehabilitating an NFL defensive end after a catastrophic hand injury. The published account describes care that began with open wounds and pinned fractures — wound and scar management first, then strengthening the fingers that drive grip, then putty, pinch pins, grippers, wall push-ups and even dribbling a basketball to restore impact tolerance and wrist motion — and a return to play that same season.

Out of respect for patient privacy, this practice does not name patients. The details above come from Sports Illustrated's published reporting.

“He exceeded all his goals in therapy, and then some. You would give him an A-plus, and he's not done yet.”
Deborah Austin, OTR, CHT, in Sports Illustrated, Nov. 11, 2015
